Many thought that the 2014-15 Premier League campaign would be a rebuilding year for manager Louis Van Gaal and his men. Picking up the pieces that former manager David Moyes had left the team in last year following a seventh place finish. But after a 3-0 thrashing of rivals Liverpool it has a lot of people asking: are Manchester United title contenders?

Van Gaal’s club has been in top-form as of late. United have rattled-off six consecutive wins and thanks to a couple of slip-ups from league leaders Chelsea, the Red Devils find themselves now eight points back of first and only five points behind crosstown rivals and defending league champions, Manchester City.

Their attack has really stepped up over the last few weeks, which is impressive when you consider they’ve been missing winger Angel Di Maria. While they are missing a key component to their attack, their ability to go forward even without Di Maria shouldn’t surprise anyone when they have which the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, and Juan Mata to lean on.

But United has shown they’re capable of doing more than just scoring goals. While their back-line has been shaky this season, which is something they could try to sure-up come the January transfer window, goalkeeper David De Gea has been playing out of his mind. With four clean sheets in his last six starts, many are saying he could be the player of the year.

United find their next slew of games against teams that can be beat. Their next seven are against teams outside the league’s top-four. While anything is possible and a team could sneak up on them, the club will have an opportunity to turn up the heat on Chelsea and Man City. Chelsea may be eight points clear, but if ManU continues it’s winning ways they may be forced into the title contention talks. Come April, Old Trafford may be singing the praises of Louis Van Gaal.
